Tom Yawkey Wildlife Center Field Trip

August 7, 2021 Lynne Trotter
Black Whistling Ducks

Black Whistling Ducks

We have been on the waiting list to visit Tom Yawkey Wildlife Center and afforded the opportunity this past week. Wow, what a great tour of this 24,000 acre preserve! This property is managed by SCDNR and is comprised of Cat Island, South Island and North Island on Winyah Bay and the Santee Delta. Its 31 square miles of marsh, wetlands and forest all managed for wildlife diversity. We saw gators, black whistling ducks, spoonbills, egrets and wood storks just to name a few. The history of the islands and the generosity of the Yawkey’s is fascinating! I particularly liked the family mantra; Do the right thing, Do it quietly and expect nothing in return! We can’t wait to go back!
