Wildlife photography is a challenge, so many variables and in every trip there is a lesson learned. This year our goal is to get the best photograph we can of the Great Blue Heron “Stick Dance”. I’m sure that many people have never seen the GBH mating ritual. When the male brings the stick to the nest, the stick is passed off and in the perfect photograph the pair’s necks and beaks form a heart. Then the stick is placed in the nest as the pair continue to build the nest. Teamwork and commitment are required in nature and in life!
In 2021, we have been on three field trips and we are getting closer to the GBH heart photograph, but its not easy! Scouting and patience are definitely required! Recently, after sundown and over two hours with the tripod and camera set in a perfect position we decided to give it up for the day. Literally one minute after breaking down and walking away, guess who came to the nest? Hustling back into position, in near darkness, we were lucky to get this shot and we are encouraged to keep trying to get that perfect heart.
Are you looking for some wildlife art for your home or office? Look in our Store or Gallery under the Birds category for some of our Wildlife shots. They look great printed on Satin fabric - no glass and no glare! The Rosetta Spoonbills are our favorites but maybe there is a new favorite coming. Hopefully our best Great Blue Heron Stick Dance will be released soon!
