Field Trip to the Largest Known Stand of Rocky Shoal Spider Lilies
Landsford Canal State Park on the Catawba River in South Carolina is the home of the largest known stand of rocky shoal spider lilies. Trotter Arts took a quick field trip on Saturday afternoon to see this remarkable display of nature. This spider lily is only found in South Carolina, Georgia and Alabama. They require clean, free-flowing water with an even rocky bottom to root. Peak blooming occurs in May through June.
This stand is so surprising and breathtaking that we hope to go back with the kayaks to capture different perspectives. We were amazed that these rare and endangered plants have survived as rocky shoals and clean free-flowing water has vanished over the years. The future of such unique habitats should certainly be protected and managed wisely. God’s creations are truly magnificent!
We are working on formatting a Catawba River rocky shoal spider lily photograph to print on satin fabric. The sheen on the fabric should make for an excellent presentation! It is a fun project, and we hope to have one to release very soon!
Our next show will be on Sat-Sun Memorial Day Weekend on Hilton Head Island at Shelter Cove. We look forward to this show, hosted by Nash Gallery and the Shelter Cove Merchants.
